Wastewater treatment removes contaminants from wastewater and converts it into an effluent that can be returned to the water cycle. Treated Wastewater is largely used in the Agriculture and Industrial sectors. The Kingdom of Bahrain has 11 wastewater treatment plants that are owned and operated by the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning. Bahrain also has a two pronged policy with regards to Wastewater Treatment: expanding and upgrading the current wastewater treatment plants and implementing a wastewater decentralization scheme for newly developed settlements.
